Punta Arenas, Chile
Welcome
The 21st edition of the International Conference on Harmful Algae (ICHA) will convene around 500 attendees from at least 50 countries, bringing together the world’s leading scientists and researchers addressing Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). HABs represent a pressing global issue marked by a rise in frequency, scope, and impact. The increase in these events is attributed to several factors, such as nutrients increments in the water column due to human activities, ballast waters, advancements in science and technology geared towards studying these events, and extreme oceanographic climate fluctuations, such as El Niño and La Niña, the Antarctic Oscillation, as well as the broader effects of climate change.
The conference will be held in Chile, specifically at the Dreams Hotel in the city of Punta Arenas, from October 19 to 24, 2025. We extend a warm welcome and invite all of you to join and participate in this most important Scientific Conference on Harmful Algae, which will take place at the Southern tip of South America in Punta Arenas, Chile, amidst the breathtaking landscapes of Chilean Patagonia.
Punta Arenas city is located in the largest region of Chile, the Magellan Region, in the southernmost area of Chilean Patagonia, nestled along the northern coast of the Strait of Magellan, which connects the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. The conference will be set against a backdrop renowned as a natural laboratory, featuring fjords, channels, islands, glaciers, mountains, forests, steppes, and unique wildlife. It is recognized globally as a “hot spot” for Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) events, underscoring its scientific importance. Moreover, Punta Arenas holds historical and geographical significance as a gateway to the Antarctic continent.
In addition, Punta Arenas offers abundant accommodations and a diverse gastronomic scene, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience for conference attendees.
During the early Spring of the Southern Hemisphere, October 19 -24, 2025.
