Workshop HAB Early Warning Systems

Description:
Harmful algal blooms early warning systems can reduce effects of HABs. This is recognized by the UNESCO-IOC Intergovernmental Panel on Harmful Algal Blooms which includes the Task Team on the Early detection, warning and forecasting of HAB events. The workshop will include presentations by the Task Team members and workshop participants and also discussions. The organizers hope that participants will leave the workshop with new ideas and contacts.

Program

  • Welcome by the chair of the UNESCO-IOC IPHAP Task Team on the Early detection, warning and forecasting of HAB events.
  • Overview and aims of HAB early warning systems.
  • Automated in situ observations of HABs.
  • Satellite remote sensing of ocean colour for observing high biomass HABs – focus on hyperspectral sensors.
  • Modelling approaches for forecasting advection of harmful algae and the development of blooms.
  • Other topics to be decided.

Presenter Details

Name: Bengt Karlson

Title: Research, PhD.

Dr. Bengt Karlson is a biological oceanographer/marine biologist specializing in phytoplankton and Harmful Algal Blooms. He has a PhD from the University of Gothenburg: On the role of the pico- and nanoplankton in the Skagerrak (1995). He worked as a lecturer and scientist at the University of Gothenburg 1995-2000. Since then he is employed at SMHI (Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute) where he is a senior scientist at the Oceanographic Research Department. At present he works mainly in the Kattegat-Skagerrak and in the Baltic Sea. To understand short term algal bloom dynamics and long term changes Bengt combines satellite remote sensing, automated in situ observations, molecular and classical methods and modelling. Bengt has more than 30 years of experience in the field and has contributed to several EU funded projects, e.g. HABES, HABILE, JERICO, JERICO-NEXT and JERICO-S3. In 2024 Bengt contributed to two “Digital Twin” projects: Algae Storm and DTO-Bioflow. At present (2025) he works in a Swedish Research Council Formas funded project on harmful algal bloom forecasting, a project on algal toxins, in a project on metabarcoding of marine phytoplankton funded by a Swedish research council and in the Swedish Biodiversity Data Infrastructure. In years 2017-2021 Bengt contributed to CoClIME www.coclime.eu. He is also active in work related to the EU WFD and MFSD. Bengt started the on-line Checklist of phytoplankton in the Kattegat and the Skagerrak in 1996. It has transformed into the Nordic Microalgae web site http://nordicmicroalgae.org which is used by many microalgae specialists. It is now part of the Swedish Biodiversity Data Infrastructure.

Dr. Bengt Karlson is engaged in GlobalHAB (http:www.globalhab.info). He is also a member of the ICES-IOC Working Group on Harmful Algal Bloom Dynamics (WGHABD). He was the chair of WGHABD for three years. He represents Sweden in the UNESCO-IOC Intergovernmental Panel on Harmful Algae (IPHAB) where he is chair of the Task team on harmful algae early detection and warning systems. Bengt initiated and leads the Nordic Marine Phytoplankton group (NOMP). Bengt also started the European IFCB user network. The IFCB is the Imaging FlowCytobot, a device for automated analyses of plankton based on imaging in flow methodology. In year 2022 Bengt co-convened the GlobalHAB symposium on automated observations of plankton arranged in Fiskebäckskil, Sweden.
